Disco 2 ownership

Hello all,

I have always wanted a Land Rover and I am looking in to buying a td5 Disco. I would be looking to spend 5/6k and would hope this would buy me a decent example.

I was wondering about ownership? I have read countless horror stories about reliability problems that cost a fortune to fix. I even stumbled across one site called 'landroverhell' that just slates Land Rovers.

This car would be for my wife and our baby daughter too so reliability and safety is paramount.

Can anyone offer a truthful evaluation about ownership of a td5 Disco?

Truth is when they work they are great, the biggest problem I have seen in my 5 years on the scene is lack of maintenance from the previous owner. Owning a td5 is something you need to go into with your eyes open and be prepared to spend a bit catching up with what others have neglected. Apart from that they are not too bad unless you are really unlucky

Your budget should get you a decent late Td5 discovery. Be prepared to look at as many as you can and test-drive them too. There is lots of advice on what to look for on here and other websites. The website you mention is written by someone with a very one-sided view.

Land Rovers are no worse than any other car. I sold my Td5 discovery a few years ago after 4 years with very little issues and bought a 90, and an Audi A3 Tdi 9 months ago. I've had more issues with the Audi than the Discovery.

Thanks for the feedback. I have read buyers guides about what to look for and such, and whilst this helps, it doesn't remove the fear completely of picking up a Disco that might hit you with a huge bill.

Is it better to buy a Disco with higher mileage that has had a lot of the problems sorted, or to buy a lower mileage that hasn't encountered many problems? There's a couple that take my fancy. One of which looks clean, immaculate engine bay and only 62,000 miles etc but very little in terms of written information about the vehicle.

The other has covered 117,000 miles but has a big write up, full Land Rover specialist service history and a full RAC inspection carried out plus a years warranty. But does that count for anything?

I've got a V reg with 118000 on the clock. FSH. In three years of ownership I've needed to have a new fuel regulator , rear trailing arm bushes and a battery. Parts are cheap but my DIY ability extends to checking tyre pressure and even indies don't work for nothing. Currently its leaking oil and water which could be ignorable or very expensive. Given the choice of a genuine 62000 miles with a recent service or a 117000 mile with full history, I'd take the lower mileage but that's just me.

Mick's right, the other thing to take into account is that nobody ever writes posts about how good their car is!

I've had mine three years and I'm still finding corners that the previous owners cut so to speak.
