The Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, is one of only three hospitals in the UK, which carries out research into the causes of cancer. It also has wards for the treatment of cancer patients.
Funds are always needed for research and an appeal was launched in 2005 to try to raise £1,000,000.00 for new facilities, special care units and a chemotherapy suite.
At one of their monthly club meetings in 2005 the Yorkshire Section of the Discovery Owners Club decided to do some charity fund raising in 2006 and the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal was chosen. Lena Rowland offered to coordinate the efforts with Sharron France and Barbara Rackham.
Collections started at the Driffield Spring Adventure with a “How many balloons in the Discovery” competition and sales of T-shirts and other items from a tombola stall on the Discovery Owners Club stand at Driffield. A North East Section member did a midnight streak for a bet and more pounds were collected for the appeal.
Lena, Sharron and Barbara made collections at a holiday camp site at Mablethorpe and the effort continued at the big 4x4 shows at Billing, Malvern and Peterborough.
At Malvern, a member dressed in drag and made a collection in the entertainments hall.
The local car shows rallies, which the Yorkshire Section attends, were also used as fundraisers.
A total of over £4000 has been collected and handed over to Cat Newman of the Weston Park Hospital at the Tankersley Manor, Cat thanked Lena and all who contributed to the appeal.
