Disco 1 or 2 V8

Post by Buhhdie » Wed Oct 10, 2018 1:10 pm

Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a Discovery V8 and I'm specifically looking at either a 1 or 2. I have an ideal Budget of up to £2000 but can stretch to £4000 for a perfect one.
I'm learning to be good at DIY car jobs (I'm currently restoring a classic kit car) so the potential for issues doesn't worry me too much but the more advanced electrical and technical points concern me a little.
I'd like to take it off-roading occasionally but nothing extreme.

From my research I have determined these general differences;
D1; Chassis generally strong, bodies rust, seemingly quite a "basic" vehicle with fewer technical drivers aids, manual diff lock. Smaller overhangs, better for off-road use The 4L V8 is a development of the old 3.5.

D2; Bodies generally strong, chassis rust, many more driver aids and features some with different lock some with out but potential to add the lever to bring it back, the 4L is a new engine, originally from the range rover.

My questions to you guys;
* Whats the real world difference between the 2 V8s?
* Which is "better" manual or automatic? (This might be a moot point though as the manual V8s seem like rocking horse brains)
* Are the additions to the D2 like the ACE or the rear pneumatic suspension actually worth it or are they "just another thing to go wrong"?
* Service intervals on the V8s?

I'm seeing this one this evening to get a feel for the vehicles as I've never actually driven one, but also seems to be a good spec for what I would like so will give it an honest shot. I'm a fond believer of the "if something seems too good to be true is usually is" school of thought so I don't want to go in too hopeful.

Any comments on this particular one?

I have had two V8s, both autos.
A D1 3.9l and my current D2 4.0l.
The D1, an L Reg, was reasonably basic and one of the last L200 style models. Had problems with the engine, warped head and liners. Also body corrosion to the doors and the inner wings were going when I sold it.
The D2, an 03 preface lift, is so much better.
It's a Japanese import and corrosion free. Fully specced and great condition.
Try going to a dealer specialising in Japanese imports, they cost a bit more but the condition will probably save you money in repairs later.
If want an idea what it's like, check out the new edition of Discourse, as it is featured as a "Member's Ride".
Good hunting.

If you get a disco 2, make sure you treat the chassis to prevent the rust.
